Cost Analysis of Alternative Culvert Installation Practices in Minnesota

چکیده

Various factors associated with conventional culvert design, including shallow water, perched inlets, and high-flow velocities, can cause difficulties for migrating fish and affect their genetic diversity and longterm survival. Conventional culvert design has traditionally been based on hydraulic conveyance, safety, and cost. Recently, some alternative culvert designs have been developed to facilitate salmon migration on the West Coast of the United States. These alternative designs focus on matching the natural dimensions and characteristics of the stream channel through the culvert. The intended purpose of these newer designs is to provide unimpeded passage of aquatic life, reduce maintenance costs, and improve erosion control. Currently, some of these new designs are being implemented in Minnesota, mostly when fish passage is a consideration. There are concerns about the additional costs associated with these alternative designs as well as whether they are really needed at some road crossings. The objectives of this research were to summarize statewide fish-passage concerns related to culvert road crossings on public waters and to perform a cost comparison between the conventional and the alternative culvert designs.

Differing Levels of Forestry Best Management Practices at Stream Crossing Structures Affect Sediment Delivery and Installation Costs

Forestry best management practices (BMPs) are used to reduce sedimentation from forest stream crossings. Three BMP treatments (BMP ́, BMP-std, and BMP+) were applied to three forest road stream crossings (bridge, culvert, and ford). BMP ́ did not meet existing BMP guidelines, BMP-std met standard recommendations, and BMP+ treatments exceeded recommendations. Following BMP applications, three simu...

Experimental Investigation of Bed Variations due to Circular Culvert Jet with Different Angles

Downfall flows from different outlet hydraulic structures such as culverts and jetsthrowingtothe erodible downstream bed cause scour hole and changes in the downstream bed topography. Therefore,by performing some physical modeling tests on culvert jet flow under different angles, changes in the downstream bed topography under the effect of different parameters such as flow rate, depth of the ta...

Substrate roughening improves swimming performance in two small-bodied riverine fishes: implications for culvert remediation and design

Worldwide declines in riverine fish abundance and diversity have been linked to the fragmentation of aquatic habitats through the installation of instream structures (e.g. culverts, dams, weirs and barrages). Restoring riverine connectivity can be achieved by remediating structures impeding fish movements by, for example, replacing smooth substrates of pipe culverts with naturalistic substrates...

Human Impacts on Nile River Morphology

This paper shows the impacts of human interference on Nile River morphology. A roadway culvert was constructed to connect an island on Nile River to the eastern bank of the Nile had altered river morphology in the vicinity of the island. The paper focuses on, 1) the efficiency of the roadway culvert to pass the normal flow, and 2) the impact of the roadway culvert on river morphology. A one-dim...
